The Sholavandan famous betel vine has applied for GI tag by Centre for rural education and development facilitated by NABARD Madurai Agribusiness Incubation Forum and its Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre with the guidance of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Board and District Collector, Madurai. The GI Nodal Officer, Sanjay Gandhi applied on behalf of MABIF and the applicant.
Madurai is one of the ancient cities in the Pandya Kingdom located on the banks of the river. The betel leaf and its importance were highly portrayed in ancient times. The stream of Vaigai and its sediments are prime factors of Madurai soil richness and quality of the betel leaves. The proof of inscription is in “Jenaga Narayana Perumal temple” in Sholavandan.
