First State-level Conclave on Geographical Indications

MABIF organized the First State-level Conclave on Geographical Indications at Sathya Park and Resorts, Thoothukudi on 19th March 2022. CEO, MABIF welcomed all participants, set the context of the conclave, and led a discussion on the concept of brand identity, or GI. NABARD DDM Suresh Ramalingam has welcomed the event dignitaries followed by Shri. Srutanjay Narayanan IAS, Assistant Collector honored all the dignitaries of the conclave. Shri.T.Venkatakrishna, CGM, NABARD, TNRO gave the special address virtually.

After that, Dr.K.Senthil Raj IAS, District Collector, Tuticorin delivered the presidential address. Followed by Shri. Balaji Saravanan, SP, Tuticorin addressed the gathering. Hon'ble MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi was the chief guest of the Conclave addressed and launched the Handbook of GI products of Tamil Nadu, GI Map of Tamil Nadu and blockchain-based traceability on GI tagged Kovilpatti Kadali Mittai developed by NABARD MABIF Incubatee. The conclave covered GI importance, case studies and use of GI Tag logo, the innovative solutions for enriching the GI Market potential, the digital promotions for GI, the Field level challenges in implementing traceability, E-Commerce opportunities by Shapers Studio Pvt Ltd, Indian Institute of Packaging, Deepan Chakravarthy, Varnik Systems and Solutions and GI Pro, Trichy and Representatives from various GI associations like Kovilpatti Kadalaimittai, Velachery Toys, Pathamadai Pais, Temple Jewelry explained their GI activities.

The session was concluded by the Shri.Srutanjay Narayanan IAS with way-forward for the conclave. The conclave highlighted the need for International GI tag filings, increase the number of Authorized user filings for the GI products, and explored more GI tag in Tamil Nadu considering the rich tradition and history. About 150 officials and participants from NABARD, APEDA, MSME, the GI registry, the GI association, and GI authorized users took part in the conclave.
